VIFC Feb. 10-Slide Show of Fruit Tour to Spain

Heather Flanagan will give a slide show of her trip to Zaragoza Spain with Dr. Bob Norton, Cheryl Grunbock and Greg Guiliani to meet with Spanish fruit scientists and tour their research orchards.  Dr. Bob will speak briefly on chores to do in the orchard this month.  We meet at the Vashon Land Trust Building, 10014 SW Bank Rd, Vashon.  Doors open at 6pm and the meeting starts at 6:30pm.

VIFC Fall Fruit Show Nov. 8th

The Vashon Fruit Club is having their Fall Fruit Show on Saturday November 8th from 10am-3pm.  Over 100 apple varieties will be on display in the Senior Center on Bank Rd.   Apple experts Bob Norton, Jean Williams and Lori Brakken will be available to identify that mystery apple.  At the Land Trust building next door, Wes Cherry will be speaking chantix online no prescription about cider apples and his cidery from 11am-12pm.  Dave Hunter of Dave’s Mason Bees will talk about the popular Mason Bee from 1pm-2pm.  Orders will be taken for club grafted apple, pear, cherry and plum trees.  Under rules for non-profit organizations, our plant sales are restricted to three events per year and this is our last sale for 2014.

VIFC May 13: Native and Medicinal Plants

The next Vashon Fruit Club Monthly Meeting is on Tuesday May 13, 2014 at the Land Trust Building. Please join us to hear Vashon’s own John Browne speak on “Native and Medicinal plants in the PNW”. The doors open at 6pm and the meeting starts at 6:30pm. Hope Bloesch will share her fruit chutneys.  The Land Trust is at 10014 SW Bank Rd, Vashon, WA.

VIFC Feb. 11th Meeting “Micro Farming”

VIFC Meeting Jan. 14 – Elections and Winter Chores

Join us on Tuesday, January 14th at the Vashon Land Trust Building, 10014 SW Bank Rd, Vashon Island.  Doors open at 6 pm and the business meeting starts at 6:30pm where we will elect officers for 2014.  A presentation on “Winter Chores in the Orchard” by Dr. Bob Norton will follow.  Light refreshments will be served.

VIFC Fall Fruit Show – Sat, Nov 2

The Vashon Island Fruit Club’s (VIFC) annual Fall Fruit Show is rapidly approaching on Saturday, November 2ndfrom 10 am to 3 pm.  The festivities will take place in the Senior Center and the Land Trust Building, both on Bank Road. Our display of Island grown fruit will be in the Senior Center, along with the apple identification and membership table (renewal season is here). We will also be selling our young grafted trees, primarily apple.  Next door at The Land Trust Building will be presentations on fruit related topics.

PRESENTATIONS in the Land Trust Building     

  • 11:00 am Dr. Ethan Russo: “The Holistic Orchard: Experience on Vashon with an Organic Spray Program”   This presentation will outline one Vashon Islander’s application of Michael Phillips’ organic approach to fruit growing that:
    • Is a general tonic for plants.
    • Produces improved fruit growth, vigor and nutrients.
    • Markedly reduces insect predation via anti-feedant effects, but is not harmful to pollinators.
    • Is anti-fungal on leaves and fruit, but improves champix online chantix mycorrhizal symbiosis in the soil.
    • Reduces bacterial and viral disease burdens.
  • 1: 00 pm Dr. Beverly Gerdeman : “Backyard Fruit Pests in Western Washington.”   A noted researcher and entomologist from Washington State University, Dr. Gerdeman will share techniques for protecting backyard fruit from damaging insects – including the newly arrived and dreaded spotted wing drosophila.
  • 2:00 pm Drs Al Watts and Bob Norton “The Bob and Al Show”:
  • Our oldest and wisest fruit growers sit down to a conversation and we get to listen in!
