PFC April 13 – Soil Testing

This month’s speaker will be Sophia Gidlund from the Pierce County Conservation District.  She will be speaking on soil testing and how to interpret and what to do with the results.  She will also be able to talk about the role of the county conservation districts and take your questions.  We meet Thursday, April 13, at the Sheridan Park Community Center, 680 Lebo Blvd. and Clare Ave., Bremerton, at 7 pm.

PFC March 9 – Honey bees

This month’s meeting on Thursday, March 9, is about honey bees.  George Purkett will give us a presentation about the challenges and solutions for raising honey bees in our local climate.  We meet at the Sheridan Park Community Center, 680 Lebo Blvd., Bremerton at 7 pm.

PFC Spring Grafting Show – March 4, 2107

Learn how to graft and make your own fruit tree, or have one of our members make it for you.  Add varieties to existing trees.  Beginners welcome!  Choose from dozens and dozens of antique and modern varieties of apples, pears, cherries, and plums. We will be selling M-26 apple, OHxF-333 pear, K-5 cherry, and K-1 plum rootstock and scion wood for grafting as well as sticks of figs, grapes, and kiwis for rooting. Stock up on berries and other plants, footies for insect protection, grafting knives, mason bees and houses, and other supplies. Learn all about pests and diseases and what to do about them. Find out about our native mason bees and how to care for them. We’ll have lots of experts on hand to try to answer all your fruit related questions. Spend some time with us at the show and learn all kinds of interesting things. Admission is free, but donations are greatly appreciated.

PFC Feb. 9 – Grafting

This month’s meeting on Feb. 9 will be about grafting.  Dr. Bob Norton, former head of the research station in Mt. Vernon, will give a short talk on grafting tree fruit.  We will also have some hands-on practice.  We meet in the Sheridan Park Community Center, 680 Lebo Blvd., Bremerton, at 7 pm.

PFC January 12 – Restoring Old Fruit Trees

Randy Lee, member of PFC and other WCFS fruit clubs, will give us a presentation on Restoring Old Fruit Trees at our first meeting of the New Year, this Thursday, January 12, at 7 pm in the Sheridan Park Community Center, 680 Lebo Blvd., Bremerton.  Join us to learn the best ways to get those old, overgrown, neglected fruit trees back into production.

PFC Nov. 10 – Mushrooms

PFC member Susan Anderson will be giving us a presentation about growing mushrooms this Thursday, Nov. 10, at 7 pm in the Sheridan Park Community Center, 680 Lebo Blvd., in Bremerton.  We will be building kits to grow oyster mushrooms.  Please bring a clear plastic bag about 15-18” long (like a newspaper bag) and a twist tie and extra bags and ties if you have them.  We will also elect next year’s officers.

PFC 2016 Fall Fruit Show

Just a reminder—the Peninsula Fruit Club Fall Fruit Show is this coming Saturday, Oct. 22, from 10 to 4 at the West Side Improvement Club, 4109 West E Street, Bremerton  98312.  Bring your mystery apples for identification, and visit us for a fun day of fruit tasting.

PFC Oct. 6 – Asian pears

Our meeting this month is early—the first Thursday rather than the second Thursday.  Jim Gerlach from Nashi Orchards on Vashon and a member of the Vashon Island Fruit Club is going to talk to us about growing Asian pears and how to make perry.  Join us at the Sheridan Park Community Center, 680 Lebo Blvd. in Bremerton at 7 pm on Oct. 6.

PFC Sept. 8 – Columnar Apple Tree Research Project

Our very own PFC President Mike Geiser will be the speaker at our meeting on Thursday, September 8.  Mike will be telling us about the research project our club has started—breeding for a new columnar apple.  Pollen from columnar apples was applied to blossoms on several other varieties this spring.  Seeds from the resulting apples will be planted to see if any display the columnar trait.  Join us at the Sheridan Park Community Center, 680 Lebo Blvd. in Bremerton at 7 pm on Sept. 8 to learn details about the project.

PFC August 11 – Raspberries

Join us Thursday, August 11 at 7 pm in the Sheridan Park Community Center, 680 Lebo Blvd., in Bremerton to hear Trent Trapp speak to us about growing raspberries and his u-pick raspberry business.  Please bring some ripe fruit so members can sample what’s available this time of year.
